About The Dor L'Dor Leadership Program
The Dor L'Dor Leadership Program, a combined program for Camps Pembroke, Tel Noar and Tevya, is recognized in Israel, the Jewish camping community, and throughout the United States as a unique and innovative leadership development experience for young people who have attended the Cohen Foundation Camps. Current campers who have completed the 10th grade are eligible to experience a memorable 5-week tour of Israel and return to camp as Counselors-In-Training (CIT’s). This wonderful adventure combines their desire to learn about their Jewish homeland, their love for camp and a passion for developing life-long leadership skills.
At the Cohen Foundation, we strongly believe that exposing young people to Israel and Jewish Heritage are integral parts of building Jewish identity and character. We view visiting and experiencing Israel as a rite-of-passage. This program has been overwhelmingly successful with over 800 CIT’s completing the program since its current format was introduced in 1996. In fact, former participants are now leading today’s CIT’s on their leadership program and tour of Israel. We have found that the time of transition between being a camper and counselor is the ideal moment for this “once in a lifetime” growth experience.
CIT’s complete Dor L’Dor with treasured memories and new found knowledge about the historical, religious and cultural aspects of the State of Israel. They also continue to develop life-long friendships with campers from each of the three Cohen Camps while developing leadership skills that will serve them well at home, at camp, in school and in their future lives as Jewish community leaders. In addition to the personal enrichment each CIT gains, the program provides our camps the opportunity to choose Junior Counselors for the following summer from a group who have completed a challenging program and had meaningful exposure to Israel.
On the Dor L'Dor Leadership Program, CIT’s are exposed to both interactive workshops and hands-on leadership training that further develop both camp-specific and life-important skills. While traveling and back at camp, CIT’s learn to be positive role-models and begin to develop skills for working with children in a camp setting. This program is physically, spiritually, and intellectually stimulating with the objective of experiencing Israel’s history, culture, land and people while developing personal leadership skills for the future.
The Israel trip has included touring the historic sites and museums of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, celebrating Shabbat at the Western Wall, hiking and camping in the Negev, snorkeling in the Red Sea at Eilat, climbing Massada, kayaking on the Jordan River, and experiencing a weekend long mifgash with Israeli teens, often resulting in international friendships that last well beyond the summer.
